Im thinking Codec . . .?

. . . when copying dvd video's to my computer the folder ends up containing a bunch of files marked 'VIDEO_TS VOB' or 'VTS'. There are some with the actual movie, some with rediculously limited partials of the movie and then some that appear to be only data. I am trying to make the video all 1 icon (as all my purchased online videos) and eliminate the big mess. Is this what a codec is used for ? If so where can I find one ? If the solution is different can someone please share ? Thanks in advance !
