I desperately need help editing a vob file?

I have a mini dvd camcorder and want to edit some of the files. They have been finalized and play fine in dvd player I just would like to edit them. I am having major difficulties with this. Everything I am reading says I need to convert the vob file to a mpeg file. I have tried downloading several free converters and still cannot seem to get this done. My main goal is to take the files off the mini dvd, which only contain about 30 minutes worth, and write them to a full size dvd thus eliminating the the dozens of mini discs. I am extremely fustrated with this and considering seeing how much it would be to have a video editing company to it for me. Does anyone have any ideas?
